ODPP Appeals Acquittal of Police Impostor Joshua Waiganjo ¶
On May 8, 2020, Principal Magistrate Joe Omido acquitted Joshua Waiganjo and his co-accused, citing a lack of evidence to convict them of impersonating senior police officers.
Waiganjo, a former Rift Valley provincial police boss John M’mbijiwe, and former Anti-stock Theft Unit in-charge Remi Ngugi, who is now deceased, were charged in 2013 with impersonation and abuse of office.
However, the Director of Public Prosecution has now filed an appeal in the Nakuru High Court, seeking to overturn the acquittal. The appeal is pending hearing.
Waiganjo had previously written demand letters to former Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere, former Chairperson of National Police Service Commission Johnston Kavuludi, and former Director of Criminal Investigations in Naivasha Martin Mbaya, seeking an apology and compensation for his ordeal.
