Kenya Airways, grounded since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to resume domestic flights in the coming days, according to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The resumption of domestic flights coincides with the lifting of travel restrictions between counties in Kenya, as announced by the president on June 26, 2020.
President Kenyatta also hinted at a possible international flight resumption in the near future, stating that the government will set a date for Kenya Airways to resume international flights.
During a video conference sponsored by the Corporate Council on Africa, President Kenyatta emphasized the importance of safety, saying, "We're eager to open up, but we have to make sure we all stay safe."
Kenya Airways has suffered significant financial losses due to the pandemic, with an estimated Sh10 billion lost so far this year, according to CEO Allan Kilavuka. The airline's losses could reach Sh50 billion by the end of 2020.
Kenya Airways had been struggling financially before the pandemic, with losses of Sh12 billion in 2019, compared to Sh7.1 billion in 2018.
