On June 29, 2020, the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) revealed that it had overseen expenditure worth Sh3.8 billion in less than three months.

The NMS team, led by seven senior military officers and Director-General Major General Mohamed Badi, took office on March 17 to assume Nairobi County's four key functions: health, transport, public works, and planning.

The City Hall initially allocated Sh3.5 billion for the NMS's operations, with Sh1.25 billion set aside for development projects and Sh2.25 billion for recurrent expenses.

Through the third Supplementary Budget tabled in Parliament on June 29, 2020, the Treasury allocated an additional Sh300 million for the financial year ending on June 30, 2020.

Of this budget, the NMS is to spend Sh217.1 million on administrative expenses, Sh46 million on city planning and development, Sh38.5 million on transport, and Sh1 million on public works.

The NMS has been at odds with Governor Mike Sonko's administration over budgetary allocations for the next financial year starting July 1, 2020, with President Uhuru Kenyatta sanctioning an allocation of Sh26.4 billion to run services in 2020/21.
