Lawyer Waiganjo Says Governor Waiguru Was Targeted Due to Misogyny

June 28, 2020, marked a significant day in the life of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru as she survived an impeachment ouster after the Senate found no evidence of corruption and abuse of office against her.

Speaking during an interview with K24, lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo, who was part of the legal team that represented the county boss during her impeachment hearing in the Senate, said the corruption allegations levelled against his wife were trivial and could not be proven.

Waiganjo stated that the case presented by the county Assembly was frail and ridiculous since none of the allegations could be substantiated. He further accused the county Assembly of targeting Waiguru due to misogyny, stating that a woman who knew what she wanted and was ambitious like Waiguru could easily be pulled down if anyone said they were corrupt.

"If you understand the dynamics of Kenyan politics, you will know that the easiest thing to put on someone's head was an allegation of corruption and woe unto you if you are a woman and people think you are getting too much, and too ambitious," Waiganjo said.

He emphasized that the issue of misogyny was serious and needed to be addressed in the country. Waiganjo's comments came a day after the Cleophas Malala-led special committee said in its report findings that allegations which Waiguru was facing were not substantiated thus failed the threshold for removal.

"There was no evidence linking the governor with the establishment of the tender evaluation committee. The committee therefore finds that the allegation was not proved and therefore not substantiated," the committee said.
