On June 28, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta extended warm congratulations to the newly elected President of Malawi, H.E Lazarus Chakwera, following his victory in the Tuesday presidential election.

President Kenyatta's message, which was filled with joy and a sense of shared history, highlighted the strong bond between Kenya and Malawi, dating back to pre-independence times.

"It is with a great sense of joy that we join our Malawi brothers and sisters in celebrating your victory as the incoming President of the Republic of Malawi," President Kenyatta said in his message.

He added that the mandate given to President Chakwera was a clear expression of the confidence Malawians have in his able leadership, and a confirmation of their desire for progressive leadership that will unite and propel their country to greater heights of development.

President Kenyatta also emphasized the importance of the historical ties between Kenya and Malawi, facilitated by shared aspirations for growth and development, and a strong Pan-Africanist spirit.

"Excellency, it is this strong bond of friendship, historical bilateral ties and a shared vision for progress that should form the bedrock of the renewed Kenya-Malawi relations during your tenure in office," President Kenyatta said.
