On June 28, 2020, the Kenyan government's threats to Ngong Forest sparked concerns about the potential impact on the economy and homeowners.
According to George Wachiuri, founder of Optiven Group, the government's actions will have a negative effect on the economy, struggling businesses, and low collection of government income.
Wachiuri emphasized that the current issue raised by Hon. Tobiko will not affect the original beneficiaries allocated those parts of Ngong Forest but will have a very serious and negative impact on current owners – Wanjikus.
Other groups that will be affected include:
- Retired civil servants who bought homes in those estates, with some developments having over 20,000 homeowners.
- Banks that have massively supported home buyers and have deeds as security for mortgages.
- Businesses that will lose government revenue in terms of rates, rent, and tax.
- Current home owners, mostly 6th or even 8th generation owners, who do not know the stories of 1932, 1978, 1997, etc.
Wachiuri urged the government to spare these homeowners the pain and take responsibility for their actions, as they have received income, approved titles, and approved houses.
As private sector members, Wachiuri called for balanced advice to be offered to the current government.
