Malawi's newly elected President Lazarus Chakwera was congratulated by Kenya's Kanu party leader Gideon Moi on June 28, 2020, a day after he was declared the winner of a presidential election re-run.
On behalf of Kanu and personally, Gideon expressed his congratulations to Chakwera, highlighting the shared history, values, and symbols between Kanu and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which Chakwera leads.
Chakwera's campaign focused on unity and enhanced provision of social services, including healthcare, water, education, and infrastructure, which aligns with Kanu's values.
Malawians were praised for maintaining peace during the campaign period, despite a year-long tension following the annulment of the first round of the election in May 2019.
Gideon also commended Chakwera for his support during the demise of President Moi in February 2020, attending his funeral at Kabarak.
Chakwera and his vice president Saulos Chilima were sworn in on June 28, 2020, by Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda in a ceremony held in Lilongwe, Malawi's capital.
