Kenya has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, with 259 new patients identified after testing of 2,718 samples.
According to Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Mercy Mwangangi, the new cases have pushed the country's tally to 6,070 from 5,811.
Over the past 24 hours, Mwangangi revealed that the number of people who had recovered from COVID-19 had increased to 1,971 from 1,936 reported on Saturday, June 27, after 35 more patients were released from hospitals.
However, two patients had succumbed to the disease, raising the death toll from 141 to 143.
"Counties need to bear the responsibility to ensure we combat the coronavirus…We expect county governments to enhance testing capacity and surveillance, deploy rapid response teams. Health facilities need to be readied," said Mwangangi.
As of Sunday, June 28, at least 10,114,973 people had contracted the disease since it broke out in Wuhan, China in December 2019.
