On June 28, 2020, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta joined other African leaders in congratulating Malawi's new President Lazarus Chakwera, who was sworn in alongside his deputy Saulos Chilima at the BICC square in Lilongwe, Malawi's capital city.
Chakwera's win in the presidential election re-run, which was conducted on June 23, 2020, marked a significant moment in Malawi's history, with the Malawi Electoral Commission declaring him the winner a day after the election.
President Kenyatta expressed his confidence in Chakwera's leadership, stating that the Malawi people have faith in his ability to lead the country forward.
He also pledged to foster a strong bilateral partnership with Malawi, citing the warm historical ties between the two nations, which date back to pre-independence times.
“Kenya and Malawi enjoy warm and historical ties dating back to pre-independence times, it is this strong bond of friendship and a shared vision for progress that should form the bedrock of the renewed Kenya-Malawi relations during your tenure in office,” President Kenyatta stated.
Orange Democratic Movement Party leader Raila Odinga also sent a congratulatory message to Chakwera, hailing the outgoing President Peter Mutharika for creating a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.
