On June 28, 2020, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta joined other African leaders in congratulating Malawi's new President Lazarus Chakwera, who was sworn in alongside his deputy Saulos Chilima at the BICC square in Lilongwe, Malawi's Capital City.
Chakwera's win was declared a day after the Malawi Electoral Commission announced the results of a presidential election re-run, which was conducted on June 23, 2020.
President Kenyatta expressed his confidence in Chakwera's leadership, stating that the Malawi people have faith in his ability to lead the country forward.
He also pledged to foster strong bilateral partnership with Malawi, citing the two countries' warm historical ties dating back to pre-independence times.
“Kenya and Malawi enjoy warm and historical ties dating back to pre-independence times, it is this strong bond of friendship and a shared vision for progress that should form the bedrock of the renewed Kenya-Malawi relations during your tenure in office,” stated President Kenyatta.
Orange Democratic Movement Party leader Raila Odinga also sent a congratulatory message to Chakwera, praising outgoing President Peter Mutharika for creating a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.
