On Saturday, June 27, 2020, a Kenya Airways plane carrying 129 Kenyan students landed at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa at 7:45 pm.
The students had been stranded in Sudan for four months due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Speaking after their arrival, the students expressed gratitude to the leaders who helped them buy air tickets to travel home.
They also shared their deplorable living conditions, including trouble getting decent meals and access to healthcare services.
Leaders such as Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nasir, and Lamu East MP Shariff Athman came to their rescue after a video highlighting their plight went viral.
The students, who come from various counties including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera, and Nairobi, will undergo a 14-day quarantine at the Kenya School of Government.
They will be tested for COVID-19 and released back to their families after completing their quarantine.
