On June 28, 2020, Malawi's capital city Lilongwe witnessed a historic inauguration ceremony, marking the beginning of a new era for the country.

At the ceremony, Lazarus Chakwera and Saulos Chilima took oath of office as President and Vice President respectively, a day after the Malawi Electoral Commission declared them winners of the presidential election re-run.

Chakwera, who vied on a Malawi Congress Party ticket, secured 58.57% of the vote, defeating incumbent President Peter Mutharika.

Chilima, a sitting Vice President and leader of the United Transformation Movement, had previously ditched Mutharika to support Chakwera's election bid.
