Since the digitization of the process, applying for a paybill number has become significantly simpler.

Among Safaricom's popular products are short-term paybill numbers, which can be used for fundraising purposes such as weddings, funerals, school fees, medical appeals, or charity events.

These short-term paybill numbers are essential for the duration of the fundraising period, which can range from a few weeks to a few months. After this period, the number will be discarded.

For longer fundraising events, Safaricom provides that paybill numbers can last up to a maximum of six months. The application process is done through the Safaricom Self-help portal, and after submitting the required documents, the number can be obtained within 24 hours.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to apply:

  • Open the Safaricom Self-help portal and select option 2 for a short-term paybill number.
  • Choose the purpose of your paybill number from the available categories.
  • Provide further details, such as attaching hospital admission forms, a copy of the ID, a birth certificate for minors, and a letter from the bank or a cancelled cheque, depending on the purpose.
  • Upload the required documents and click 'apply.'
  • Fill in the applicant's details, the validity period, and payment details, ensuring that all starred () options are completed.
  • Accept the terms and conditions and click 'Apply.'

Once submitted, you can track the status of your application by clicking on 'My Applications' on the portal. You will either see 'pending,' indicating that your application is being processed, or 'rejected,' with details provided by Safaricom on why the application was rejected.

Accessing the funds collected is straightforward. Simply dial 2344# and follow the prompts to check the balance and withdraw funds. For larger amounts exceeding the MPesa limits, you can withdraw the funds through MPesa or the bank.
