On June 28, 2020, marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge made a significant move to conserve the environment by adopting 50 hectares of forest land in Kaptagat.

As part of his efforts to restore the forest to its original cover, Kipchoge has committed to planting indigenous trees on the adopted land.

"Restoring this forest and handing it over to our children and grandchildren when it’s intact is the best gift we can give them. I will finish this race with you," Kipchoge said during the adoption ceremony.

Environment CS Keriako Tobiko had earlier given an executive order for the gazettment of Kaptagat forest ecosystem as a water tower, and Kipchoge's adoption comes in the wake of this move.

"In two weeks, we will officially lift the gazettment of Kaptagat as a forest and elevate it to a water tower," Tobiko said during the fourth edition of the Kaptagat forest tree planting exercise in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
