On June 28, 2020, a court order halted the impeachment proceedings of Governor Charity Ngilu in Kitui County.
The High Court intervened after Ngilu's lawyers filed an application challenging the impeachment motion.
Majority Leader Peter Kilonzo stated, 'As law-abiding citizens, it's only prudent for us to follow the law. But the Governor should rest assured that her impeachment will proceed as planned once the court matter is concluded.'
The court's decision is a significant setback for the County Assembly, which had planned to table the impeachment motion on Monday.
The Assembly accuses Ngilu of various offenses, including gross violation of the Constitution, violation of the County Governments Act, and abuse of office.
Ngilu's lawyers have warned that proponents of the impeachment motion risk getting jailed for contempt of court if they proceed with the ouster debate.
The inter-parte hearing has been scheduled for July 6, 2020.
