As the country battles the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council of Governors has called on Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) to focus their energies on fighting the virus instead of pursuing impeachment motions.

Speaking in Kakamega, Council Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya lamented that while the nation is united in the fight against COVID-19, some MCAs have resorted to intimidating governors and threatening them with impeachment.

On June 27, 2020, just a day after Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru was acquitted by the Senate Select committee investigating her impeachment, Oparanya expressed his concerns, stating that a total of six impeachment motions are looming, which he said will defeat development and destabilize the fight against Corona.

He added that while it is within the mandate of MCAs to oversee the executive, they should support governors as they execute their mandates instead of harassing them.

Referring to the recent acquittal of Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru, Oparanya said that the committee's report dismissed the charges levelled against her, stating that they do not meet the threshold to remove a governor from office.

The Council will converge this week to chart the way forward on how to avoid the rampant trend of impeachment.
