On June 28, 2020, the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Northern Rangelands Trust announced compensation for 12 residents from Isiolo who were injured by wild animals between 2014 and 2017.
The 12 residents will receive a total of Ksh 6.7 Million, with each beneficiary set to receive an average of Ksh 600,000 to help them recover from the inconveniences caused by their injuries.
The compensation includes Ksh 45 million paid to nine Isiolo families who lost their loved ones due to wildlife attacks, and a Ksh 20 Million kitty to rehabilitate the Serena-Loruko bridge that links Bufallo Springs game reserve In Isiolo County with Samburu game Reserve in Samburu County.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala said the funds will go a long way towards helping resolve cases of Human-Wildlife in the region, and that the compensation is a gesture to restore confidence among members of the public that the Government is committed to supporting its citizen when they suffer such unfortunate incidents.
CS Balala also announced a Ksh 1 Billion allocation to cushion conservation efforts from the adverse effects of Covid 19 pandemic during the recently announced economic stimulus programme.
Various leaders who spoke at the event lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to allocate Ksh 1 Billion to cushion conservation efforts.
