On May 15, Angola was taken to hospital in Cali, Colombia, with a severe fever, which was later confirmed to be COVID-19. Three days later, she was put into an induced coma and underwent a caesarian section due to the state of her lungs.
Doctors performed the surgery at the Versalles clinic, where Angola was being treated. The case was described as 'a lot of shock' by Dr. Paula Velasquez, a specialist in internal medicine.
Angola's baby, Jefferson, was born without the coronavirus, but struggled to breathe and had to be revived. Despite being premature, Jefferson quickly started putting on weight and breathing more easily.
Angola's sister, Angela, who was by her side throughout the ordeal, expressed relief that her sister and nephew had survived. However, she also expressed concern about the spread of COVID-19 in Colombia, which has reported over 2,600 deaths and 80,000 cases.
Angela hopes that her sister's and nephew's case will serve as a lesson to others about the dangers of COVID-19. 'There are many people who go around without face masks, who go to parties, because they don't know anyone (with the virus) they don't realize' how dangerous it is.
