On June 28, 2020, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga announced a subsidized tariff for the Madaraka Express Freight Service to help customers affected by the economic situation caused by Covid-19.
The stimulus tariff, which will be in place for 90 days, aims to reduce the burden on customers using the service from Mombasa to Naivasha.
According to Mainga, the steady increase in cargo uptake by the Madaraka Express Freight Service in the past few weeks can be attributed to the sustained efforts of key players in the freight transportation business, including Kenya Railways, Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Bureau of Standards, and Kenya Revenue Authority, to streamline processes and make the service more efficient.
During the pick-up phase, over 30,000 tonnes of cargo were transported between Mombasa and Naivasha.
