On June 26, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that Kenya Airways would resume operations in a few days, starting with domestic flights.
Speaking during a virtual conference sponsored by the Corporate Council on Africa, Uhuru noted that the government would first allow the national airline to resume domestic flights before setting a date for international flights based on the global Covid-19 situation.
"We're doing everything we can to make sure we are back in the skies... we're eager to open up, but we have to make sure we all stay safe," Uhuru told the summit.
Kenya Airways has been grounded for three months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has severely disrupted the global aviation industry.
The airline's CEO, Allan Kilavuka, disclosed that Kenya Airways has lost an estimated Sh10 billion due to the Covid-19 crisis, with losses potentially soaring to Sh50 billion by the end of the year.
