On June 27, 2020, Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary-general Francis Atwoli's youngest wife Mary Kilobi shared photos of their house help on Instagram, sparking a heated online debate.
The photos, which were shared on Kilobi's Instagram account, showed the house help serving her and her colleague at KTN, Sophia Wanuna, at Atwoli's palatial home in Kajiado.
According to the photos, the house help, a Caucasian woman, was seen wearing a green t-shirt and blue jeans as she washed hands and served drinks to the two women.
Many Kenyans took to social media to express their surprise and amusement at the revelation, with some jokingly comparing Atwoli to the late Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.
"Yes, it's that cold in Kajiado," Kilobi captioned the photos, which were met with a mix of reactions from online users.
Some users praised Atwoli's flashy lifestyle, while others questioned how the house help obtained a work permit to work in Kenya.
"If I get filthy rich, imma hire a whole team of white servants, have them all wearing that red fez hat while serving me tea while on their knees calling me 'Memsahib, is the temperature good? Colonise the colonialists," wrote one user.
Another user joked, "Atwoli and Idi Amin, same WhatsApp group," while a third user noted, "This would make Idi Amin smile from the grave."
