On June 24, 2020, a tense scene unfolded in Nandi Hills as residents clashed with police officers, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to nine others.
As the situation escalated, Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter arrived to convey President Uhuru Kenyatta's message of condolence. However, his efforts were met with resistance from the residents, who were demanding justice for the victims.
"The president is concerned and disturbed about what happened here and he has sent me his condolences," Keter stated, but his words fell on deaf ears as the residents began chanting 'Ruto' and demanding to hear a message from Deputy President William Ruto.
Despite the chaos, Keter managed to convey the president's message, but only after promising the crowd that he would also convey what the DP had to say.
"Ruto is my good friend. You think you know him more than I do?" Keter asked, but the residents remained unimpressed.
As the situation continued to unfold, Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua announced that all police officers in the station would be transferred to other stations away from the Rift Valley, effective June 29.
