On June 22, 2020, Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua announced that the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) would provide medical cover for police officers from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021.

According to a memo, NHIF was awarded the tender to provide comprehensive medical cover for National Police Service and Kenya Prison Service members for a period of one year.

Police officers welcomed the move, citing the inconsistency of the previous insurance program, which had caused them suffering.

The contract is expected to generate significant revenue for NHIF, which collected Sh12.7 billion from police officers in the 2017/18 financial year.

Under the new contract, each police officer will be able to cover a spouse and up to five children aged between zero and 25.
