Deputy President William Ruto's allies may be in for a rude awakening following the sentencing of Sirisia MP John Walukhe and Grace Wakhungu on June 25, 2020.
Walukhe was handed a seven-year jail term or a fine of Sh707 million after being convicted of a Sh297 million scandal, while his co-accused Wakhungu received the same sentence.
Their company, Erad General Suppliers, was also convicted for seven years, with the sentences running concurrently, meaning they will only serve seven years each if they default on paying the fine.
Political analysts believe that the ruling may set a precedent for future cases, potentially targeting Ruto's allies.
As one analyst noted, 'This is a very clever move, if at all it came from the famous Stop Ruto Movement. This is high octane politics some of us may not be able to understand.'
With the Corruption tag hanging over Ruto's head, he may face a similar fate to Walukhe if he is not careful, or the state may seize his assets instead of a long jail term.
