Malawi's President Peter Mutharika is facing mounting pressure to concede defeat in the re-run of the presidential election, with early indications suggesting he trails behind his main rival Lazarus Chakwera.
According to results from all 28 districts, signed off by officials and party representatives, President Mutharika is lagging behind Lazarus Chakwera, leader of the main opposition Malawi Congress Party and the Tonse Alliance.
Despite the signs pointing to his loss, President Mutharika has refused to concede defeat, saying there's no winner or loser until the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declares the final result.
His running mate, Atupele Muluzi, has appealed to supporters to disregard reports of his loss, saying they must wait for the MEC's official announcement.
Atupele Muluzi, son of former President Bakili Muluzi and leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF), claimed that up to 15 monitors deployed by the DPP/UDF to opposition strongholds are currently missing and feared dead after being attacked by opposition loyalists.
