On June 26, 2020, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana took a significant step towards realizing his presidential ambitions, declaring his intention to run for the top seat in 2022.

As his second term as county boss comes to an end, Kibwana is setting his sights on the presidency, vowing to work with every Kenyan to achieve the nation's dreams and aspirations.

"Kenyans, I am overwhelmed by your reception of my presidency announcement. We are in this together to the end. We shall shape everything together. For a change there is going to be public participation in establishing our future leadership," Kibwana said in a statement.

According to Kibwana, he has carefully analyzed the comments and reactions to his candidature declaration and is convinced that he is the best bet for the country's future.

"I have followed the conversation carefully and I am grateful for the comments. I am encouraged. My candidature will crowdsource ideas on the Kenya we deserve. We shall be on this together until August 2022 and beyond God willing. That is my prayer," he stated.
