Published on June 26, 2020, George Mathenge's story is a testament to the challenges faced by many Kenyans who move abroad in search of better opportunities.
Mathenge, a teacher from Kenya, traveled to the UK in 2009 to pursue his master's degree at the University of Leicester. However, his dreams of settling in the UK and advancing his teaching career were short-lived.
Upon arrival, Mathenge realized he couldn't afford the fees to join the University of Leicester, despite having an admission letter. He had to rely on menial jobs, including cleaning, to make ends meet.
"I needed Sh2 million to pay for my fees. I only had Sh60,000. I did not go on a scholarship, but I was determined to make it," Mathenge recalled in an interview.
After completing his studies, Mathenge began teaching in London, but the experience was far from ideal. He was uncomfortable with the way parents raised their kids in the UK and struggled to make a living.
Eventually, Mathenge made the decision to return to Kenya in 2013, a choice he doesn't regret. Today, he is the principal of Brookhurst International School in Kajiado county.
Mathenge's story serves as a cautionary tale for Kenyans who consider moving abroad. "If you have started a good life here, just continue. If you have an opportunity to go there and improve yourself, do it, but know it is not easy," he advises.
