Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has announced that students at Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions are set to write their examinations ahead of the proposed reopening of learning institutions in September.

Speaking at Kisumu Polytechnic on Friday, Prof. Magoha stated that despite the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the TVET examinations calendar, the institutions have been better placed to conduct the examinations.

According to Prof. Magoha, the institutions have been directed to explore possibilities of having students whose examinations are due recalled, and have put adequate measures in place as directed by the Ministry of Health to combat coronavirus.

Prof. Magoha noted that most of the students at the institutions are day scholars, thereby not posing a big challenge on the implementation of COVID-19 protocols.

He added that the institutions have been directed to explore offering classes in shifts to adhere to the social distancing protocol.

On primary and secondary schools, the CS said the ministry is engaging stakeholders to see how best to manage the aspect of social distancing once they reopen.

Additionally, the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) is set to employ 5,000 teachers and 10,000 interns, as disclosed by Prof. Magoha.
