On June 26, 2020, the Governing Council of the Amani National Congress (ANC) made a significant decision, expelling Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala from the party.

The Council convened on a Friday and stated that their decision was based on the Senator's failure to respond to charges levelled against him, despite several invitations.

According to the ANC, Senator Malala was given adequate time to defend himself but chose to ignore the invitations and instead attacked the process and officials.

The ANC had accused Senator Malala of being disloyal to the party and its leader.

As a result, the party's disciplinary committee informed the decision to expel the Senator.

Meanwhile, the ANC Party has extended the tenure of its current office bearers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has prohibited public gatherings.

Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana stated that the postponement of the elections was necessary to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Governing Council adopted a resolution to postpone the elections for 36 months, pending the easing of COVID-19 containment measures.
