Kenya's COVID-19 death toll has reached 137 after five more patients succumbed to the virus, the Ministry of Health announced on June 26, 2020.

The new figure represents a case fatality rate of 2.5 percent, lower than the global average of 5 percent.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman emphasized the importance of adhering to measures issued by the Ministry of Health to contain the spread of the virus.

“Physical distancing is only part of the measures, there are other basic measures that need to be observed including hand washing, wearing face mask, etiquette among others. I appeal to Kenyans to continue observing the measures in order to limit the spread of the virus,” he said.

According to the latest figures, the number of COVID-19 cases documented since March 14 has risen to 5,533, with 149 new infections detected from 3,090 samples screened.

Of the new cases, 48 patients were released from isolation, bringing the total recoveries since April 1 to 1,905. The recovery rate in Kenya stands at 34 percent, lower than the global average of 54 percent.

There are currently 3,491 active cases under monitoring at health facilities and home-based care.

The new cases include a one-year-old infant, with 94 males and 55 females affected. Nairobi county has recorded the highest number of cases at 73, followed by Mombasa (20), Kajiado (15), and Siaya (13).
