Senate to Decide on Waiguru's Impeachment

On June 9, the Kirinyaga County Assembly members impeached Governor Anne Waiguru on charges of gross violation of the Constitution and abuse of office.

The Senate will now hold a special sitting to debate the report of the 11-member special committee that investigated the allegations.

The committee, chaired by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, is expected to submit its report to the Senate on June 10.

One of the key allegations against Governor Waiguru is that she abused her office by conferring a financial benefit for foreign trips she did not make.

According to the allegations, Governor Waiguru was paid Sh10.6 million in imprests for 13 foreign trips she never made.

However, Governor Waiguru insists that she traveled and presented the committee with undated photographs to support her claim.

Another allegation against Governor Waiguru is that she failed to deliver the annual State of the County address for two consecutive years, in 2018 and 2019.

However, Governor Waiguru claims that she delivered the address in 2018 and 2019, with the second address being delivered at the Kerugoya Hospital.
