On June 26, 2020, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana made a significant announcement on Twitter, stating his intention to run for the presidency in the 2022 election.

According to the Governor, he had listened to the voice of the common citizen, Wanjiku, and had decided to put his name on the ballot in 2022. He expressed his willingness to be Wanjiku's President, saying, 'I am available, ready and willing to be Wanjiku's President. Will go all the way to the Ballot Box with Wanjiku in 2022. We must ensure devolution works for our communities.'

With this announcement, Governor Kibwana joins a growing list of potential presidential candidates, including Governor Alfred Mutua and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Kibwana's decision to run is premised on his good track record as the governor of Makueni.
