On June 26, 2020, the Senate Select Committee appointed to probe the impeachment of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru delivered its verdict, acquitting her of corruption allegations.
The committee's decision was based on the lack of evidence provided by the County Assembly directly linking Waiguru to the alleged corruption, abuse of office, and violation of procurement regulations.
According to the committee's report, the charges against Waiguru were not substantiated, and the committee recommended that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) delve deeper into the allegations.
Waiguru was impeached by the County Assembly on grounds of gross violation of the constitution and other laws, abuse of office, and gross misconduct.
The Senate Select Committee, led by Cleophas Malala, conducted a two-day hearing into the allegations and concluded its findings on Wednesday.
