On June 24, 2020, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru appeared before the Senate Select Committee to face impeachment charges. The committee has now acquitted her, stating that the charges levelled against her were not substantiated.
The committee found that the County Assembly failed to provide direct evidence linking Waiguru to the alleged corruption, abuse of office, and violation of procurement regulations.
According to the committee's 88-page report, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have been recommended to delve deeper into the allegations and identify culprits for prosecution.
Waiguru was impeached by the County Assembly on grounds of Gross Violation of the Constitution and Other Laws, Abuse of Office, and Gross Misconduct.
