On June 26, 2020, a Senate committee cleared Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru of abuse of office allegations levelled against her by Kirinyaga MCAs.
The 11-member special committee, chaired by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, found that the MCAs did not provide sufficient evidence to link Waiguru to the alleged offences.
According to Senate Standing Order 175, the impeachment process ends at the committee level if it determines that the charges do not merit.
Waiguru's impeachment had been sparked by a motion tabled in the Kirinyaga County Assembly on March 31, 2020, by MCA David Kinyua Wangui, who accused Waiguru of various wrongdoings, including abuse of office, gross misconduct, and violation of the Constitution of Kenya.
On June 9, 2020, 23 out of 33 MCAs voted in favour of Waiguru's removal, but the Senate committee's report has now cleared her of any wrongdoing.
