Jameela Jamil Criticizes Kim Kardashian's Body Image

Published on June 26, 2020

British actress Jameela Jamil has taken to social media to criticize Kim Kardashian for promoting unrealistic body standards. Jamil expressed her concerns that Kardashian's portrayal of a tiny waist as the key to femininity and sex appeal is harmful and perpetuates the toxic expectations of women.

According to Jamil, such body image issues are fueled by patriarchy and are a sign of harm that Kardashian cannot stop doing. She encouraged her fans to protect themselves by unfollowing pages that would hurt their self-esteem and to focus on power, equality, and psychological freedom.

Jamil's comments come after Kardashian posted a photo of herself wearing a corset, which sparked a long post from Jamil about self-image and the impact of social media on women's body image.

"I haven’t been trying to cancel Kim K. I was always trying to arm you with the knowledge to recognize for yourselves that this is a bullshit expectation of women, developed by the patriarchy," Jamil wrote.

She added, "Is this wrong? Yes. But I am not sure she realises that she’s doing to others what her idols did to her, in making her think a tiny waist is the key to femininity and sx appeal."

Explaining further, Jamil encouraged her fans to take control of their own self-esteem and to unfollow people and brands that do not make them feel powerful and happy.
