On June 24, 2020, the African Development Bank (AfDB) announced a significant contribution to South Sudan's efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The bank approved a $4.16 million grant to bolster the country's capacity to detect and prevent the spread of the virus.

According to the AfDB, the grant will be used to improve facilities for managing Covid-19 cases, including the procurement of oxygen cylinders and the recruitment and training of health workers. This will enhance the country's capacity for detecting cases and tracing contacts.

South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, became a member of the AfDB in 2012. As of June 25, 2020, the country had recorded 1,942 Covid-19 cases, with 224 recoveries and 36 deaths.
