On June 26, 2020, Liverpool fans celebrated their team's Premier League triumph with a street party outside Anfield, despite police warnings to maintain social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.
Thousands of jubilant supporters thronged the area, many wearing face masks, and lit red flares while singing football songs. The celebrations were largely good-natured, with fans hugging and taking photos together.
However, police criticized the fans for not adhering to the regulations in place, with Assistant Chief Constable Rob Carden stating that the area had been 'disproportionately affected' by the coronavirus crisis.
Carden urged fans to mark the occasion safely, saying, 'The overwhelming majority of fans have recognised the fact that now is not the time to gather together to celebrate, and chose to mark the event safely. They are a credit to this city.'
Despite the police warnings, many fans chose to gather outside the stadium, with some carrying flags and scarves, and others bringing crates of beer. Police officers were present in the area, but no attempts were made to disperse the crowd.
