On June 26, 2020, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala was expelled from the Musalia Mudavadi-led Amani National Congress (ANC) following a disciplinary hearing.

The governing council of the party approved the expulsion on Friday, citing the senator's consistent dissent from the party's stances and ideologies.

One notable instance of this dissent was during the Kibra by-election late last year, when Senator Malala drummed up support for ODM's Imran Okoth, despite his party having fielded its own candidate.

The party's disciplinary committee had previously suspended and summoned the senator to appear and respond to charges lodged against him, including allegations that his utterances and activities at a political rally in Kibra on October 27, 2019, prejudiced the integrity and reputation of the ANC Party.

However, Senator Malala failed to respond to the charges and refused to appear before the committee to defend himself, leading to the decision to expel him.
