Published on June 26, 2020, Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has embarked on a new venture, constructing a liquid detergent factory at its Olkaria Geothermal complex in Naivasha, with an estimated investment of Ksh60 million.
The project, which is about 70% complete, is part of the company's Good-to-Great (G2G) Transformation Strategy aimed at creating sustainable value from one generation to the next.
Speaking on the new development, the company's Geothermal Development Director, Eng. Abel Rotich, attributed the move to the institution's strategy, saying, 'The intended completion and take-over date is expected to be somewhere in the first quarter of 2021.'
KenGen has already obtained pre-requisite laboratory approvals from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) to manufacture various detergents, including liquid hand washing detergent, liquid bleach, hair shampoo, carpet shampoo, car shampoo, liquid disinfectant, and fabric softener.
The company submitted an Environmental and Social Impacts Assessment (ESIA) report for the proposed detergent plant to National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) on October 26, 2018, and got approvals on July 19, 2019.
KenGen's diversification into detergent manufacturing is part of its efforts to integrate innovation in its conversations and actions, with other projects under the Good-2-Great Strategy including commercial treatment and bottling of drinking water and the KenGen Calibration centre.
