On June 26, 2020, a significant partnership between the national agriculture ministry and Makueni County was launched to support food security in the region. The initiative, part of the One Million Kitchen Gardens Plan, aims to support 15,000 households in Makueni County with kitchen garden equipment.
The programme, officially launched in Kasikeu, Kilome subcounty, is a collaborative effort between the National Government and selected counties to boost reliable food and adopt a healthy diet in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The kitchen garden kits comprise a variety of vegetables, including Kale, Spinach, Black Nightshade, Amaranth, Cowpeas, and solar driers.
Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary Anne Nyaga emphasized the importance of a balanced diet in boosting immunity and fighting diseases. She noted that grants would be provided to farmers to ensure they can purchase necessary inputs for their produce to yield.
Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana accompanied the CAS and expressed his county government's commitment to supporting the rollout of the initiative to other areas. He promised that his Agricultural department would ensure that the programme reaches every household in Makueni County.
The initiative is expected to improve the immunity and incomes of Kenyans, ultimately lifting the economic status of the country.
