On Thursday night, a devastating fire swept through Gikomba Market in Nairobi, leaving a trail of destruction and loss for traders. In response, President Uhuru Kenyatta's government has pledged to compensate all those who lost property in the inferno.
According to Interior PS Karanja Kibicho, the government will not only compensate the traders but also modernize the market. The first phase of the modernization project is expected to be completed within three months.
Speaking after assessing the damage, PS Kibicho emphasized the importance of isolating the market with a perimeter wall to accommodate an estimated 10,000 people. He also announced plans to construct new markets to absorb affected traders.
While acknowledging that the fire incidents are deliberate acts of arson, PS Kibicho warned those behind such attacks, stating that they will be charged in court. He also urged members of the community to volunteer information regarding the fire incident to the office of Nairobi Regional Commander.
