June 26, 2020 - The Indian monsoon season has claimed at least 107 lives in the past 24 hours, with the majority of the deaths occurring in the impoverished eastern state of Bihar.

According to officials, 83 people were killed in Bihar after being struck by lightning, while another 24 died in northern Uttar Pradesh state.

Heavy rain is forecast to hit Bihar on Friday and Saturday, with the local India Meteorological Department office warning of severe weather conditions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the victims' families and assured that both state governments are carrying out urgent relief work.

Lightning strikes during the monsoon season are a common occurrence in India, with over 2,300 people killed by lightning in 2018, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
