On June 26, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in Ndhiwa sub-county, where a 43-year-old woman identified as Victorine Akinyi took her own life due to financial pressure.
According to area Assistant Chief Richard Omollo, Akinyi was overwhelmed by the pressure of repaying a Sh30,000 loan from a local women's financial group, known as a chama.
Residents suspect that Akinyi was stressed by the debt, which had become due. This was not the first time she had faced such pressure, as she had previously attempted to commit suicide over similar reasons last year.
Fortunately, she was saved by her neighbours, and her debt was settled. However, this time, she was unable to cope with the stress, and her body was found dangling from a tree near her home at Migoko village, Kachola Sub Location.
Ndhiwa Sub-County Police Commander Robert Aboki confirmed that the deceased never left a suicide note citing her reasons for killing herself. The police are investigating the incident.
The body was taken to Manyatta mortuary at Kobodo trading centre.
