On May 29, 2020, the National Tourism and Hospitality Protocols Task Force published a gazette notice outlining new guidelines for the tourism industry in Kenya.

The guidelines, aimed at positioning Kenya as a safe and secure destination during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, were unveiled by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala.

According to the guidelines, all tourism and hospitality establishments, travel and tour companies, accommodation facilities, eateries, food and beverage outlets, entertainment and recreation facilities will be required to institute various measures to ensure their patrons and staff remain safe at all times.

These measures include displaying valid licenses and certificates signifying compliance with the provision of these protocols, as well as having all core staff with valid COVID-19 free certification not more than 14-days-old from a government-approved facility.

Guests will also be required to make advance bookings/reservation before visiting any facility or tourist attraction site, complete a medical and travel declaration form online before arrival, and adhere to social distancing measures.

Hotels will be required to operate at half capacity, remove extra room amenities, and suspend certain services such as facial treatments and caddies.

County governments will issue approval declarations for facilities and attraction sites within their jurisdiction, allowing tourists to access these facilities without hindrance.

The guidelines also emphasize the importance of staff training on the new protocols, with non-essential service providers encouraged to work from home to allow for social distancing.

As the country adapts to the new normal, the tourism industry can heave a sigh of relief, with the government's guidelines providing a clear direction for the sector's recovery.
