Senate Committee Clears Governor Ann Waiguru of Corruption Allegations

On June 25, 2020, a Senate committee led by Senator Cleopas Malala concluded its investigation into corruption allegations against Governor Ann Waiguru of Kirinyaga County.

The committee found no evidence linking Governor Waiguru to the corruption allegations, which had been levelled against her. According to sources, the accusations against the former Devolution CS were administrative challenges that did not meet the threshold for her removal through impeachment.

The Senate committee recommended the incorporation of investigative agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to further probe the graft allegations and prosecute those found culpable.

Waiguru's impeachment hearing was concluded at the Senate on June 25, 2020, with the governor saying she had forgiven her accusers. In a parting shot, she said, 'Kirinyaga people will forget what you said, they will even forget what you did but they will never forget how you made them feel and neither will I.'

The decision on her impeachment is set to be presented before the Senate on Friday, June 26, 2020.
