On June 25, 2020, Kenyan justice system dealt a significant blow to corruption when Sirisia Member of Parliament John Waluke was sentenced to seven years in jail or pay a fine of Sh707 million for his role in a Sh297 million maize scandal.
The sentence was handed down by Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Juma after Waluke and his co-accused Grace Wakhungu were found guilty of irregularly receiving Sh300 million from the National Cereals and Produce Board in 2004.
The two were listed as directors of Erad General Suppliers, the firm that received the payment, which was meant for the supply of white maize imported from Ethiopia.
Prosecution argued that the sentence should act as a deterrent to corruption, given the amounts involved, and that every person should be accountable for their actions.
Waluke and Wakhungu have the right to appeal the sentence within 14 days.
