On June 25, 2020, Kenyan Member of Parliament John Waluke was handed a seven-year prison sentence or a Sh707 million fine for his involvement in a Sh297 million maize scandal.
Waluke and his co-accused, Grace Wakhungu, were found guilty of irregularly receiving Sh300 million from the National Cereals and Produce Board in 2004.
The payment was for the supply of white maize, but the two claimed they incurred losses after a tender to supply 40,000 metric tones was cancelled.
They presented forged invoices after an arbitration, and the prosecution argued that the sentence should serve as a deterrent to corruption.
Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Juma ruled that there was evidence to show the accused persons forged an invoice to demand payment for money charged as storage fees for the maize.
The maize consignment was said to have been imported from Ethiopia.
