On June 25, 2020, a tense situation unfolded at the Nairobi County Assembly after Speaker Beatrice Elachi and her team received a tip-off about a planned attack by a group of thugs.
According to reports, the thugs, who were armed and had been mobilized by a key leader in the assembly, Abdi Guyo, had planned to storm the assembly chambers.
However, their plans were foiled when they were blocked by security personnel, who were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
One of the thugs, Jacob Ngwele, was arrested after a search of his car revealed three guns. He is currently being held at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.
Elachi has accused the Jubilee Party's Secretary-General, Raphael Tuju, of being involved in the plot to oust her from her position.
It remains to be seen whether Elachi will be able to weather the storm and continue in her position as Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.
