On November 1st, the world's largest marathon, the New York City Marathon, was set to celebrate its 50th running with 53,640 finishers, a record set in 2019.

However, the event was cancelled due to the global coronavirus pandemic, meaning Kenya's Joyciline Jepkosgei and Geoffrey Kamworor will not defend their titles.

According to President and CEO of New York Road Runners Michael Capiraso, cancelling this year's marathon was disappointing for everyone involved.

Additionally, the 2020 edition of the Berlin Marathon, scheduled for September 27th, has also been cancelled due to the pandemic.

London Marathon organisers, however, have not given up hope of holding the event on October 4th, despite the ongoing pandemic.
